palm springs: reina de la noche

for Justin

I floated your back
with my fingertips –
the lullaby of
water yielding.
This is the best part
you said, from
the underlit green –
your skin free of worry
for the moment,
slicked with chlorine,
and the stars
all you saw
from that height.
I steered you in a night
where air pinned itself
to mountaintop,
beyond struggle. You
lining the boundary
with beating eyes.
